Today is the eighth episode of The Daily Decision

In the last episode, we learned that normative descriptive making theories assume that a perfect person can make perfect decisions.

But reality is different.

Which is why we have Descriptive Decision-Making Theories

That capture actual decisions people make and the types of decisions, right or wrong, that people tend to make.

For example, why do people in their dating preferences often choose people who counter their best instincts even when they know the better decisions?

Why do people use harmful drugs (legal and illegal) even when  they know they are harmful?

If we can’t be perfect decision makers, can we at least improve our decision making?

As always, Happy Deciding.

Today is the seventh episode of The Daily Decision

In the last episode, we learned that theories help explain phenomenon and they can be tested.

We learned that decision making has three theories

  1. Normative
  2. Descriptive
  3. Prescriptive

Normative decision making assumes that a person is perfectly rational and a person who is able to measure with perfect accuracy any decision.

This assumes that a person has the time, money, energy, and mental faculties (think sleep) to make a perfect decision.

If you’re asking yourself why have such a theory if it’s impossible to make a perfect decision, it’s because by theorizing a perfect decision, we can begin to compare them to actual decisions.

As always, Happy Deciding.

Today is the sixth episode of The Daily Decision

A theory is like a story. It helps think through a complex set of events in a coherent manner.

A theory is an explanation for phenomena (the singular in phenomenon). And theories must be tested. For example,

her teaching method is based on the theory that all children want to learn

Within decision making there are three theories or ways to think about decision making

  1. Normative
  2. Descriptive
  3. Prescriptive

Normative is like “normal” but in this case normative is the best decision possible given all the time, money, and energy in the world.

Descriptive like it sounds describes all decisions, good and bad.

Prescriptive, like getting a prescription, is the idea that you can improve your decision making with intervention.

As always, Happy Deciding.

Today is the fifth episode of The Daily Decision

Academically just like life decision making is a blend of many disciplines.

Decision making draws from the fields of economics, behavioral economics, psychology, cognitive science, philosophy, law, political science, medicine, public policy, consumer behavior, and business.

It is a virtual potpourri, BIB-im-BAP, stone soup,

In each field, researchers examine either psychological, behavioral, or social conditions under which decisions are made.

For example, if we have a deadline there is a psychological pressure to make a decision. When we walk into our favorite grocery store, we often follow the same path around the store to look for our items. When we work with others we may exhibit more or less cooperative behavior depending on the situation.

As always, Happy Deciding.

Today is the fourth episode of The Daily Decision

Like fashion, it is helpful to think of styles when it comes to learning and decision making.

How people learn and

How people make decisions

can differ

Learning styles include:

  1. Visual
  2. Auditory
  3. Reading
  4. Kinesthetic

Decision making styles include:

  1. Directive
  2. Analytical
  3. Conceptual
  4. Behavioral

Styles are tendencies. Just as you may never get caught outside without wearing heels or wing-tipped shoes, you do wear pajamas.

Just because you tend want structure in your life as a directive decision making, you may be very attuned to making sure that people get along in group situations, appreciate analyzing data, and being creative in your problem solving.

As always, Happy Deciding.

Is Higher Ed High? 01 Introduction

Is Higher Ed High? 01

This is Dr. Z, Zachary Brooks, and this 1-minute podcast is called Is Higher Ed High?

Stuck between 20th century models and 21st century realities, Is Higher Ed High? asks questions about traditions and institutions that have been around for 1,000 years. Will they survive 10?

Higher Education, or simply Higher Ed refers to formal education after secondary education (high school in the United States) which include universities, colleges, academies, conservatories, and institutes of technology fall under this category.

In Is Higher Ed High?, I take an equally respectful and irreverent approach to higher Ed with ideas generated by you, the listener on the incredible, strange, good, bad, and unbelievable wonders at institutions of higher learning.

Submit your questions/thoughts anonymously here.

In the first episode, I’ll uncover the secret world of graduate assistants which includes teaching, research, administrative, and clinical assistants.

Saying “assistant” sounds innocent and dreamy but often it’s anything but as these graduate students often do the heavy lifting and create the rankings that university leaders brag about.

What’s the deal?

The deal is this: Graduate students receive work in exchange for some financial compensation to attend college. Sounds pretty good, right? It can be. And it sometimes is.

But often these “students” receive in essence less than the minimum wage at the “best” universities to teach younger students while professors are overwhelmed with administrative tasks or under-caring with secured positions that cushion them from realities of students with families, taking on debt, to try to advance a career in a world that often seems to devalue their efforts.

What’s your story?

Today is the third episode of The Daily Decision

Whenever I talk about decision making invariably the question that people ask me is …

What kinds of decisions?

It’s a good question because make lots of decisions every day.

While the easy answer is … “all types of decisions,” the better answer is conscious decisions with consequences.

They can be small such as “what to eat for lunch?”

Junk food or real food.

By the way, we make 200 food-related decisions daily (Wansink and Sobal, 2007,)

They can be large … should I buy a car?

If I buy a car, which is the best car for me? Which car fits my budget.

They can medium size decisions …

should I subscribe to Netflix? Is it in my budget?

Today is the second episode of The Daily Decision and we are going to jump right into the definition of decision making.

Decision making is …

the action or process of making decisions, especially important ones.

That’s easy enough but what isn’t easy is making “good,” “the best” or “the right” decisions for ourselves or others.

Decision making is based on your values, preferences, and beliefs

Sometimes with facts and analysis …

Think of a decision you have made in your life that was a good one.

Now think of a bad decision.

I bet you can think of a bad decision more readily.

In the next episodes, we will start to un-peel the smelly and tasty onion of decision making, 1-minute at a time on The Daily Decision for Everyone.

As always, Happy Deciding.

About-ish 1: About Dr. Z, Zachary Brooks

Who is Dr. Z, Zachary Brooks? In episode 3 of About-ish, I share what I have learned about running a podcast.

About-ish …1

Hello Hello This is Dr. Z of Dr. Z’s podcasts and I thought since I’m doing a podcast, I might as well make an “about” section with a Podcast.

I call it “About-ish” in which I will share a few things about me to the 747 visitors to dr-z.net from 34 countries … as of December 2018.

Let’s start with the name …

A picture of a man in a white dress shirt. The picture is cut off. You can see the arm of a man around Dr. Z's shoulder but you can't see the man.

This is a picture of Dr. Z.

Dr. Z

I am a doctor, but not a medical doctor

I earned an academic doctorate, or PhD, hence Dr. + my first name = Dr. Z

My first name is Zach or Zachary comes from the Bible which means “to remember” and it is the name of a prophet in the Bible, Zechariah, and according to Wikipedia Zechariah was a person in the Hebrew Bible and traditionally considered the author of the Book of Zechariah, the eleventh of the Twelve Minor Prophets. In other words, he was second to last.

Painting of "Zechariah".
Painting of “Zechariah”.

But Zachary also has an origin in Greek. Záchari means sugar. Think saccharine then say Zach.

Hear the relation?

A picture of sugar
záchari (sugar)

Anyway …

What’s a PhD?

It means Doctor of Philosophy which sounds pretty cool.

Who doesn’t like to think about fundamental problems such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language?

Just open Instagram and you’ll find people posting photos with taglines about their life or why their life is a certain way, why other people behave the way they do, love, broken hearts …

The top ten hashtags on Instagram are

#love #instagood #photooftheday #fashion #beautiful #happy #cute #tbt (Throw Back Thursday)

Apologies for the social media digression … back to PhD …

Why don’t we use D.P. or D.o.P. as in dope, like idiot, or dope like rad?

One could argue that every PhD is a little idiotic and a little rad.

If it means Doctor of Philosophy, why can’t doctors get the correct acronym? They are called doctors after all and they can’t even get their title correct?

Well as many things in life, the PhD acronym comes from Latin.

Those Romans are still influencing us. I mean they gave us laws, language, aqueducts, and ideas for movies …

In Latin, it’s Philosophiae Doctor so they took the first two letters of Philosophiae and added the first letter of Doctor to get PhD.

But let’s set aside the doctor of philosophy talk for a second because, I’ve conceived the Dr. Z Podcasts to cover a range of issues which I summarize as the 6As.

6As

What about Athletics?

We will talk about that. It’s one of my favorite topics especially in the Organ Oracles series that covers inspirational stories of people who have had organ transplants and their athletic achievements since their transplant.

What about Adventure?

We will talk about that, too in the Win or Learn program.  Not accomplishing goals is a big part of life which creates opportunities for learning. In Win or Learn, we interview the people given an opportunity to learn after not achieving a goal.

What about Academics?

Obviously, I love learning and just as importantly I love to share what I learn. In People Behind the PhDs, I interview people with PhDs about how they got into their field because their answers may surprise you.

What about Art?

As a former B-Level Hollywood actor (that’s above C, but well below A), I love all things art and the effort to try to create something in our world to make meaning out of the chaos that constantly wants to envelop us. In Social Slice, Dr. Z, that’s me, along with a special guest, Kate C., tease out the subtle truths hidden beneath the surface of social life on planet earth.

What about Advocacy?

In Anecdotes of Advocacy, I interview some of the most curious people on the planet. The people who help others and the beautiful inspiration and joy people get by looking around and asking, “How can I help?”

Finally …

I explore the Human Algorithm …

If you wonder about life and your part on it and your purpose on our rotating ball of grass, water, rock, and dirt, then these programs are for you …

If you wonder about your ability to change the world positively, don’t wonder. You can make a difference. It is a two-step process.

Take the first step. And keep walking.

Think of anyone you admire. That person is human. They looked at themselves and found a way to help the world through sport, journey, learning, creativity, and encouragement.

Their movement, their algorithm, their human algorithm changed the world for the better.

You can, too J
