Organ Oracles 08: Tamaryn Stevens, Transplant Athlete (Australia)

Everything was peachy living in the season town of Ocean Grove, Victoria, Australia near to Melbourne for a young Tamaryn Stevens but spotted with enough puff to raise a fuss during gymnastics led to a jaunt to her local doctor. For fun, Tamaryn added regular visits to her doctor and a change of diet as a 10-year old when she began to experience leg cramps and soon gymnastics was replaced by infusions then dialysis. A transplant and a year away from school opened up Tamaryn’s world to transplant camps for kids and a World Championship at the World Transplant Games in cycling.

Organ Oracles 05: Lloyd Tucker, Transplant Athlete (USA)

Growing up Lloyd was a typical suburban kid from the Inland Empire near Los Angeles, California. He liked playing soccer and riding BMX bikes. In high school, he ran 400m (i.e. “The Soul Taker) before attending Clark Atlanta University. As an adult he exercised regularly while starting a family, then a brief walk through a hospital ward changed his life.

Organ Oracles: Lloyd Tucker Preview

The changed happened slowly. The progress he saw while lifting weights surprised him. He wasn’t taking steroids to bolster his performance but is exactly what his doctors suspected when he stubbornly decided to get checked out. Like NBA players Alonzo Mourning and Sean Elliott, Lloyd had developed focal segmental glomerulosclerosis which was causing his kidneys to fail.

While trying to sort out how to proceed, a chance encounter at a grocery store lead Lloyd to find a donor and hero. Since his transplant in 2011, Lloyd has competed in the United States Transplant Games and World Transplant Games most recently winning the 100m race during the 2018 Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
